About us

Bristol Stop the War is part of the national Stop the War Coalition. We have campaigned over the last seven years against the 'war on terror' in general and in particular against the invasions and occupations of Afghanistan and Iraq, and against the threats made to attack Iran. We believe that the people of these countries have the right to determine their own future without interference from the USA and Britain. In addition we have highlighted the undermining of civil liberties at home through legislation introduced under the guise of the 'war on terror'.

Hundreds of thousands of Iraqis and Afghans have died; hundreds of British soldiers have died. President Obama, while saying he will bring the occupation of Iraq to a close, suggests that large numbers of US troops will stay for many years yet. The USA, with British support, has made it clear that the occupation of Afghanistan with ensuing death and destruction will continue and probably be stepped up. All of this at great cost when the jobs of people in Britain are under threat. Our campaign will continue while the occupations continue.

In recent weeks we have been active, along with Bristol Palestine Solidarity Campaign and other groups, in organising opposition to Israel's attack on Gaza and in highlighting the continuing plight of the Palestinians in the territory occupied by Israel since 1967.

We are composed of groups & individuals with a wide variety of political & religious views. We are politically non-aligned, We don't claim (or seek) a monopoly over anti-war sentiment & activity in the city & recognise that many groups & individuals have their own ways of opposing the 'war on terror'

Most of our activities cost money. We produce leaflets, organise meetings and demonstrations locally and arrange transport from Bristol to national demonstrations and conferences. Your donation will help us pay for these activities.
